CHURCH OF GESUATI (1724-1736)
Designed by Giorgio Massari. The construction outside has Palladian elements while the Venetian-baroque-style interior presents itself as a single nave. The ceiling frescoes were painted by Tiepolo. The church also contains works by Tintoretto, Piazzetta and Ricci. Near the church is the SQUERO SAN TROVASO, the most famous Venetian boatyard where gondolas are still built.
CHURCH OF SAN SEBASTIAN (1506-1548)
Is in Renaissance style and has a beautiful series of frescoes by Paolo Veronese: the artist himself is buried in the church, near the historic organ built in 1763 by the organ-maker Nicholas Moscatelli.
CHURCH OF THE ANGEL RAFFAELE
Rises in one of the oldest areas of the city, among the first to be colonized. It was built in the seventh century. For 3 times it was destroyed by fire. The last building is neoclassical and dates from 1639. Inside stand out the Sebastiano Mariani’s sculptures and the paintings of the choir’s parapet attributed to Gianantonio Guardi. The massive organ that we can admire was built in 1821.
CHURCH OF SAN NICOLO ‘OF MENDICOLI
Is one of the oldest in Venice: it is assumed that there were already a building in the seventh century. You can admire the works of several artists belonging to the school of Veronese. Furthermore inside this church is buried the body of St. Nicetas (a Goth martyr ). Noteworthy is also the organ of the nineteenth century. Completing the complex a robust Venetian-Byzantine bell tower, dating from the thirteenth century. In 1973 the church was used as a movie set for the film “Don’t Look Now” by Nicolas Roeg.
